Music is Life

I have been playing music for as long as I can remember. I am at my happiest when sitting at a piano, lost in whatever creation is unfolding before me. I am passionate about music and art, and I love passing this joy along to others. Most people have lacked a role model for creativity, and therefore so many people have no idea that they are even capable of being creative or musical in any way. I was lucky enough to have several mentors for creativity over the years and I want to help fill that role in your life. I have taught piano lessons on and off for years, and seeing a young person begin to realize their musicality and creative potential lights me up.

My musical background is varied. I have always had a love of jazz which I inherited from my dad. When I was 16 years old I began taking lessons from the late Bob Noyes of coastal Southern Maine, who taught me how to play Scott Joplin among other tunes. After having the most fun of my then-short life in a high school band with two friends, I enrolled at Berklee College of Music in Boston, MA where I studied piano performance and jazz theory. Later, while finishing my BS in Biology from the University of Oregon in Eugene, I was fortunate enough to help form a band called Basin & Range and was an active member and arranger for about five years (audio clips below). In addition to being a jazz-lover, I am also deeply influenced by rock, folk and funk bands from many different eras.

After taking a hiatus from more serious involvement in music to study the art and science of Chinese medicine and acupuncture, I have returned to playing and writing music as much as I can. I am excited to be offering lessons to people who value the importance of the creativity in their lives. Having access to and feeling safe enough to be musical is key to a long and healthy life and I am inspired to help you or your children in that journey of self-discovery. My approach to lessons is pretty straightforward: I'll help you learn to play what you want to play, whether that's your favorite pop song or something of your own creation. Call me at the number below if you would like to have me come inspire you to discover and engage with your creative passion. Music/piano lessons for beginners of all ages are $30/half hour lesson and are taught at my home in West Seattle.
